Impact Statement

Community service was a need that the Garrard County 4-H Council identified as an important part of the program year. The entire group decided that community service was an important aspect of becoming a good citizen. The council felt the need to instill in our youth the importance of “giving back”. Also, to make the place we inhabit a better one. In order to make this happen, a newsletter that was distributed to all enrolled 4-H families. The service project was to weed out all of the flower beds, put down landscape fabric, and plant zinnias. When asked, Shell’s Greenhouses donated over 100 zinnias for the project. The flowers were picked up, along with the other supplies for the day such as, gloves, transplant liquid, food, etc. Thank you letters were sent to volunteers and to local greenhouse that donated the flowers. The outcome was 30 4-H’ers and volunteers working with their hands, sweating and making the county park a nicer place for all. This particular project took two days to accomplish, all participants came back the second day to fulfill the job. When asked by the 4-H Agent, 100% of participants said it was a good experience and that they felt it was part of their duty to do some type of community service where they live. Also, all participants picked up trash that was on the park grounds. Not only are the zinnias sprouting but our youth. This will continue to be an annual project.
