The normal marketing process used by many producers leaves 10 to 20 dollars per hundred weight in the system for either the backgrounder or order buyer to use as profit instead of the original producer. The Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent provided on farm evaluation and producer education for Total Quality Management Certification to 65 producers to sell 2950 calves in the C.P.H. 45 sales in 5 locations, private sales and retained ownership to feed yards in Kansas and in private sales. These producers earned an additional $55-$105 per head by using these marketing opportunities. The sale of these calves generated $280,250 return to the CPH marketing and Total Quality Management Practice coordinated by Extension. Extension surveyed the participants, via personal contact to evaluate the results. Producers indicated they were very satisfied, they learned how to better prepare their calves for future marketing and would be making herd management decisions to enable them to expand their CPH marketing capabilities. One producer during a personal interview regarding his participation in retained ownership stated that he had earned more than $12,000 over normal marketing. He proudly showed a new aluminum livestock trailer he had bought with the money earned from his marketing efforts. The Genetic Improvement and Cattle Handling Facilities programs are facilitating more producers to do a better job of marketing their beef calves. Extension’s Master Cattlemen and Grayson County Cattlemen’s Association are providing excellent leadership to assist producers to participate in CPH marketing.
