4-H Camping
Impact Statement
The Johnson County Extension Council identified 4-H Camping programs as a tremendous asset in youth development for the 2005-2006 Plan of Work. Camping opportunities for youth were offered in both an over night and day camp format. Local schools, the community recreation center and over 30 volunteers partnered to enable 205 youth to attend a day camp opportunity which taught group and team building skills. When surveyed, 95% of the group felt they had made new friends, learned to work as a group and accomplished team goals. One student was quoted, "I'll be back next year. This was awesome!" Local youth also had the opportunity to participate in a week long overnight camping session at J.M. Feltner 4-H Camp in London, KY. Local businesses and civic organizations worked together to sponsor over 20 camp scholarships for youth in need. During the week of July 11th-14th, 134 campers, teens and adult volunteers spent time together developing life skills. Participants were able to take part in canoeing, fishing, recreation, craft work, rifle and archery, basketball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, leadership development, communication activities, teamwork skills, group activities, citizenship and more. Of those surveyed, 35% of campers indicated that during 4-H camp, they started or improved their leadership skills by leading group activities, 36% felt they worked as a team, 47% indicated they started to or learned to better make friends while at 4-H camp, 55% saw a new part of Kentucky and 53% said that during 4-H camp they learned how to treat others more fairly.
