Impact Statement

The Johnson County Extension Council indicated identified teaching civic engagement, community capacity and good character traits to youth as a priority for the 2005-2006 Plan of Work. To meet this need, the Johnson County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development worked in cooperation with over 30 volunteers to help youth become civically involved. The 4-H Teen club and Adult 4-H Council participated in the Main Street Christmas Event. Participants worked together to build community capacity for this event. 4-H Teen club members and the Adult 4-H Council participated in "Ring the Bell" for the Salvation Army to raise funds to help under-privileged community members. Over 30 4-H clubs and 1000+ 4-Hers participated in the "Letters to Katrina Families" relief effort. Thank you's were received from the Louisiana and Mississippi Extension Service for the kind and caring support of Kentucky 4-Hers in their time of need. 4-H clubs made donations to local Family Resource Centers for needy families. The 4-H Shooting Sports club assisted the local Sportsman club in their Annual Community Fishing Event. The event draws participants and monies from other states to the local area. The 4-H Teen club volunteered to assist the Paintsville Tourism office with a community Easter egg hunt. Over 500 people attended this community activity targeted to build community capacity. When surveyed, 100% of the youth present felt it was good to give back to your community and were willing to devote time from their busy schedules in order to build a sense of community and help others.
