Leadership Development
Impact Statement
The Johnson County Extension Council identified teaching leadership skills to youth as a 2005-2006 Plan Of Work program priority. To achieve this goal, the Johnson County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development, the Adult 4-H Council, local school systems and more than 71 volunteers worked in cooperation to offer, teach and implement the following programs and opportunities: Club Officer's Training, monthly 4-H club meetings, new member packets, leadership curriculum lessons, "A Capitol Experience" educational field trip, and the Kentucky Teen Conference. Over 75 4-H club officers and 20 volunteers participated in a county wide 4-H club officer's training. After training, surveyed officers indicated that 100% understood how to do their job and felt the training would help them in future clubs and groups, and 90% indicated they were ready to conduct their first 4-H club meeting. Additional one-on-one trainings were offered to coach the 10% that felt they needed more training assistance in conducting 4-H club meetings. Participants learned how to conduct meetings using parliamentary procedure and leadership curriculum and then applied their knowledge by teaching club members the procedures during monthly 4-H meetings. Teen club members were invited to attend a legislative opportunity called "A Capitol Experience". Teen attendance doubled for this educational activity which brings together 4-Hers and legislators and teaches youth about the legislative process. Of the attendees, 7 had never attended a legislative committee meeting and stated they now understand the process to determine which bills are heard during House and Senate floor sessions. One attendee indicated an interest in running for a legislative office upon reaching adulthood. The Kentucky Teen conference was attended by 7 teen club members (more than double the attendance from last year), 2 of which served on the State Teen Council from 2004-2006 and 1 of which will be an incoming State Teen Council member for 2006-2007. The incoming State Teen Council member developed an interest in this leadership position after attending the orientation for the Kentucky Teen Conference. Of the attendees, all have indicated an intent to return to the conference next year to further their leadership, personal development and networking skills.
