Title Alternative Fertilizer

Impact Statement

Due to rising cost of crude oil and petroleum, fertilizer prices have increased 15% this year and 25% from two years ago. With fertilizer being the biggest expense for crop, pasture and hay land, alternative, less expensive sources were being researched. An alternative fertilizer from a nearby solid waste treatment plant was being investigated by several farmers. Meetings between these farmers and theis ANR agent about fertilizer prices and alternative sources led to a producers' meeting involving University of Kentucky Agronomist and Soil Specialists witht the Cooperative Extension Service. The 43 producers attending learned the relationship between yield response to fertilizer as well as UK's basis for fertilizer recommendations. Also, discussed were alternatives to commercial fertilizers in particular a pelleted solid waste product available in large volumes at a reasonable price. Producers learned that there was at least a 10 cent per pound of actual major element savings with the alternative organic fertilizer. Over 18 producers tried over 2500 tons of the organic fertilizer. Satisfactory results have been achieved. This has amounted to over $30,000 in savings on fertilizer cost for Meade County producers this year.
