The Morgan County 4-H teen council has been working hard during the spring 06. The council had been at a stand still and lost some members while waiting for the 4-H agent position to be filled. Since then the teen council has increased their membership by 40% due to their activities and being visible in the community.
The teens began organizing activities for their sub-district meetings and activities. They helped put together the games for the sub-district teen lock-in, which had approximately 50 participants in attendance. The teens also assisted in a physical activity workshop at the annual Farm Home Family night, and helped with the registration of the annual Farm Safety Day. The Morgan County teens also attended the 4-H Capital Experience in Frankfort this year. There were 5 teens that attended, and was their first time to the capital and meeting with county representatives.
The teens wanted to be more active in leadership so they decided to attend the annual 4-H Teen Conference at UK, but due to the lack of funds. To help with the cost the teens came up with a plan to apply for a grant to cover the cost. They applied for the KY-ASAP grant, which deals with making a difference in communities by fighting the war against drug abuse, especially in youth. The teens came up with a plan to advocate for KY-ASAP while at the teen conference and to hold drug education meetings, make drug abuse related posters and to pass out pamphlets and literature about the risk of drug and tobacco use.
They were able to get enough money to pay for 8 teens to attend, totaling $1120. This allowed for the teens to attend the conference expense free. After returning from the conference the 4-H Teen Council made a power point presentation to the KY-ASAP board to illustrate their efforts in being leaders to other teens. The KY-ASAP board said this was something they would like support every year providing they have funding available.
