The Ohio County Cooperative Extension Service is actively involved in planning and carrying out
Celebrate the Child," which is held annually to provide youth and families with educational programs and family activities. The FCS Agent attends 10-12 meetings annually to plan and prepare for this event. This year the event was attended by over 2000 people. The emphasis of the entire day of this annual event is to provide the families with as much awareness of the 40 Developmental Assets, identified by the Search Institute, as possible. These developmental assets, such as family support, creative activities, parent involvement, and self esteem, enhance children’s well-being and help them to grow to be healthy, caring, and responsible individuals. Assets protect youth from making harmful choices and promote positive attitudes and behavior. This year, one classroom event was prepared and sponsored by the Extension Service to promote being physically active. Over 200 youth and their parents stopped in to try some simple and fun activities to encourage physical fitness.
