Practices:
Youth under 16 ride machines 90CC or less, abide by Kentucky laws, and wear protective equipment.

Participants in the Nutrition Education Program will practice smart shopping techniques such as coupon clipping, buying groceries, preparing more nutritious meals, and practicing food safety.

Homemakers will learn how to react physically and mentally to protect themselves from predators and vandals.

Impact Indicators:
The impact of the ATV Safety Program will be determined by the number of individuals who adopt recommended practices in an effort to protect their lives. Pre and post tests as well as personal and outsider observations will be used to collect data.

NEP Participants will be surveyed following each program to determine positive knowledge gained by 75%

An end of the year survey of homemakers who received the Soup & Salad lesson will show at least 50% making positive changes in eating habits, thus improving their health.

A random sampling of members who attended the Personal Safety lesson will determine if information has been used and show members feel more self confident about protecting themselves.

Situation:
Of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S., five (heart disease, cancer, strokes, diabetes, and artherosclerosis) are attributed to diet. These same diseases are leading causes of death in Muhlenberg County. 80% of adults say exercise is important to good health but only half make an effort to exercise regularly. Unintentional injury such as motor vehicle and personal injury accidents is also a major cause of death.

Youth need continued education on ATV laws and regulations and risks involved. There is also a need to educate clientele on the value of simple modification in choices of cooking procedures and eating habits to ensure healthy individuals.
