UK economists to discuss what to expect from the Farm Bill, ACRE

As work begins on the U.S. Farm Bill, people from many walks of life will turn their attention toward Congress to see how the new bill will shape up compared to previous versions. The new bill could affect farmers large and small, consumers, agribusiness, food safety and the environment.

Agricultural economists from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture are taking to the road in March and April with a series of public meetings, "Farm Bill, ACRE and Unicorns," in which they'll discuss what to expect from the farm bill and the revenue support program known as ACRE.

Aleta Botts, UK agricultural policy outreach director, will discuss current events and expectations for the next farm bill. Greg Halich, UK assistant extension professor, will evaluate potential ACRE payouts for the 2012-2013 crop year, and Cory Walters, UK assistant professor, will discuss lessons learned and what we can take forward to the next farm bill from ACRE, as well as differences with a traditional price support program.

Meetings will be March 26 in Georgetown at the Scott County Cooperative Extension office; March 30 at the UK Research and Education Center in Princeton; and April 2 in Elizabethtown at the Hardin County Cooperative Extension office.
