Nursery Crop IPM Diagnostics Workshop is Aug. 18

Nursery crop growers and orchard and vineyard owners will have a unique opportunity to learn the basics about integrated pest management diagnostics at an Aug. 18 workshop at the Trimble County Extension office in Bedford. 
 
Participants will spend the day honing diagnostic skills through a traditional classroom setting and also spend time in the field, where they can put their skills to use. 
 
Beginning at 9 a.m. EDT, John Hartman, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture  plant pathologist, will discuss diagnostic basics and give a pest update with Stanton Gill from the University of Maryland. The update will include information about thousand cankers disease, sudden oak death and bacterial leaf scorch. Gill will talk about emerging insect pests and new control options. 
 
After lunch, UK Extension Horticulture Specialist Shawn Wright will discuss how herbicides work and how to diagnose herbicide damage. Kyle Daniel from The Ohio State University will talk about Roundup damage in woody plants. 
 
Around 1:30 p.m., the group will travel to nearby Abrams Nursery where Daniel, Gill, Hartman, Wright and UK Extension Associate for Nursery Crops Amy Fulcher will teach outdoor diagnostics and scouting techniques.
