Dunwell awarded for contributions to ornamental horticulture
Winston Dunwell, University of Kentucky extension professor for nursery crops, recently received the Porter Henegar Memorial Award for Horticulture Research at the Southern Nursery Association's Research Conference in Mobile, Ala.
The annual award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to ornamental horticulture research, the association and the nursery industry. Fellow researchers select the recipient.
Since joining the UK College of Agriculture in 1978, Dunwell has centered his research on helping Kentucky nursery growers produce a sustainable and environmentally friendly crop. In addition, he has developed many educational programs related to sustainable, ornamental plant production and worked with industry members and colleagues to solve problems.
"Dr. Dunwell has made a significant impact on the U.S. and Kentucky nursery and landscape industries by developing and disseminating relevant information that is applicable to their businesses," said Dewayne Ingram, UK professor for nursery crops. "He has always given unselfishly of his time and expertise to colleagues and the UK nursery/landscape team. His colleagues throughout the region have shown their appreciation of his accomplishments and, by presenting this coveted award, acknowledge how he has benefited them and the industry."
"This award is a huge honor for me, because it's not just recognition from your colleagues, but it acknowledges your commitment to the industry," Dunwell said. "Many of the past recipients are my heroes, and I'm humbled to be considered among them."
In addition to being a member of the association, Dunwell is an active member of the American Society for Horticulture Science, Associated Landscape Contractors of America, International Plant Propagators Society, Kentucky Nursery and Landscape Association and the Southern Extension and Research Activities/Information Exchange Group for Nursery and Landscape Systems.
"Win is one of the most recognized nursery extension professionals in the Southeast," said Robert Geneve, UK horticulture professor. "He provides one of the most detailed, online extension newsletters for the nursery industry and fellow nursery educators. The award is very well deserved."
