UK offers Wilderness First Responder Training Course
LEXINGTON, Ky., (Nov 16, 2011)
The National Outdoor Leadership School's Wilderness Medicine Institute is bringing their Wilderness First Responder Training Course to the University of Kentucky Jan. 2-10.
Sponsored by UK Natural Resources and Environmental Science and UK Outdoor Pursuits, the course will be hosted by the UK Department of Forestry in the second floor conference room in the T.P. Cooper Building on the corner of Rose Street and Huguelet Drive.
The course is essential for anyone pursuing a professional career in the outdoors. Wilderness medical certification is required for a wide variety of jobs and internships, including a position on a restoration crew or resident wilderness educator.
The nine-day course includes a comprehensive wilderness medicine curriculum that focuses on extended care and unique wilderness therapies. Participants can expect to increase their medical knowledge, skills and confidence and will complete the course with a newfound ability to make tough medical decisions in remote places.
Those who pass the written and practical exam at the conclusion of the course will receive their Wilderness First Responder certification, which is good for two years.
Emergency medical technicians can receive 70 hours of continuing education units at no extra cost. Participants will be approved for up to 59.5 hours of credit toward a Fellowship of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine for a $15 fee.
