Recorded webinar: National Air Quality Site Assessment Tool
The National Air Quality Site Assessment Tool (NAQSAT) has been developed for the voluntary use of livestock producers and their advisors or consultants. It is intended to provide assistance to livestock and poultry producers in determining the areas in their operations where there are opportunities to make changes that result in reduced air emissions. Air emissions research from livestock production systems is increasing every year. NAQSAT is based on the most accurate, credible data currently available regarding mitigation strategies for air emissions of ammonia, methane, volatile organic compounds, hydrogen sulfide, particulates, and odor.
EPRCA REPORTING RESOURCES AVAILABLE
On December 18, 2008 the U.S. EPA published a final rule that clarified which livestock facilities must report air emissions from their facilities. The two laws of interest are the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) and Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPRCA).
Animal agriculture was granted an administrative exemption from reporting air emissions that normally occur from raising farm animals under CERCLA. In previous drafts of the EPCRA rule had created a complete exemption for reporting air emissions from animal agriculture, but in the final version, large concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) ARE NOT EXEMPT. The rule became effective January 20, 2009. LARGE CAFOs MAY FACE INCREASING LIABILITY FOR NON-COMPLIANCE FOLLOWING THIS DATE.
The Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center Air Quality team has assembled information about this rule including determining responsibility, estimating emissions, and making a report.

An ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) uses 75% less energy than an incandescent bulb and saves approximately $30 over its lifetime. The links below provide general information about CFLs, including what to do if a CFL breaks and local and state CFL collection and recycling programs (for spent CFLs)*.
*Spent CFLs can be taken to The Home Depot, which has launched a nationwide CFL bulb recycling initiative. However, if you do not live near a Home Depot contact your local county Solid Waste Coordinator, garbage provider, or local utility company for other collection and recycling programs in your area. In addition you can visit the EPA site to learn of a program near you.
