Landscape processes:
Soil water and solute transport processes at different spatial and temporal scales are one focus of our group. We investigate transport processes in well-drained silt-loam soils, and are interested in the impact of soil management on transport processes, their scale dependence, spatial correlation length and association to other soil properties.
Another focus is the investigation of spatio-temporal biomass development in farmers' fields. We describe the spatial pattern of biomass during the growing season based on crop sensor observations in combination with stochastic models.

Classes
This course deals with the state and movement of matter, and with the fluxes and transformations of energy, in soil systems. Its objectives are to develop a basic theoretical understanding of soil physical properties and processes (with emphasis on the statics and dynamics of soil water), and to demonstrate how this understanding can be applied under field conditions to make sound management decisions concerning both agricultural and non-agricultural uses of soils. Prereq: MA 113 or MA 123, PHY 201 or PHY 211, PLS 366 or consent of instructor. .

This course consists of laboratory and field exercises designed to increase understanding of important soil physical properties and processes. Its objectives are to develop familiarity with standard methods of measuring soil physical parameters, and to instill scientific methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation. Prereq: PLS 367, concurrent enrollment in PLS 575, or consent of instructor. .

The purpose of this course is to learn statistical tools applicable to the analysis of spatial and temporal data related to soil science and agronomy. Topics that are captured are: Autocorrelation, cross correlation, semivariogram, kriging, crossvariograms and cokriging, spectral analysis, cospectral analysis and coherency, autoregressive and moving average functions, autoregressive state-space analysis, and physical state-space models. The underlying textbook “Spatial and Temporal Statistics – Sampling Field Soils and their Vegetation” by Nielsen and Wendroth (2003) captures the course material. Besides a two-hour lecture per week, the students in this 3 credit unit course have a 90-minute computer lab in order to gain experience in the application of the techniques. .
