Non-Technical Summary
A new, modified set of evaluation tools and techniques for EFNEP will yield assessment data for this federal program that will provide increased credibility. In addition to dietary quality and food related behavior data, program leaders will be able to report non-nutrition outcomes such as increased quality of life indicators. The use of more sensitive evaluation tools should lead to the development of more effective nutrition education materials and teaching methodologies.
Another goal is a better understanding of the influence of education on behavioral change among low-income populations, as well as clearer programmatic and research linkages, connecting science and practice.
2009 Project Description
The NC-1169 group is in the process of conducting a review to gather information on valid and reliable methods to measure "dietary quality among EFNEP participants, and develop qualitative and quantitative criteria to use in the evaluation and selection of the best dietary quality assessment for EFNEP, considering sensitivity to change and burden on the participants." We are studying the challenges faced when working with EFNEP individuals and families. We have collected broad literature reviews and identified challenges faced when collecting data on dietary intake and behavior using surveys.
Several preliminary outputs have been developed: a survey directed at researchers and EFNEP coordinators who are trying to make collecting and reporting information from EFNEP participants easier; a list of challenges that will guide planning for more appropriate assessment strategies;and a partial bibliography of the literature related to low literacy dietary assessment
2009 Impact
The goal of the project is to develop strategies to improve the ability of EFNEP workers to collect accurate nutrition assessment information. The questionnaire, meeting discussions and literature reviewed during this reporting period have provided insights into challenges facing EFNEP coordinators as they supervise individuals who collect nutrition assessment data from EFNEP participants
