Complementary Approaches to Developing Scab Resistant Wheat Varieties
D. A. Van Sanford
Department of Plant and Soil Sciences
Non-Technical Summary
Fusarium head blight is a serious disease of wheat in Kentucky. Our crop is at risk due to the cropping system and rotation we follow. Consequences include reduced yield, test weight and grain quality as well as reduced food safety through toxin accumulation. All of these factors lead to reduced dollars to farmers and to the entire wheat industry. The best approach to solving this problem is through breeding integrated with management tools such as fungicides. The impact of this work is on the order of multi-million dollar savings in a year with moderate disease pressure in Kentucky.
2010 Project Description
High yielding scab resistant lines have been identified. Results have been disseminated at field days and in reports to stakeholders.
2010 Impact
The impact of this research and its outputs has been felt first by other wheat breeders who have been using this material to make new crosses. If one or more of these lines is released as a cultivar, the impact will be felt by growers, millers and other stakeholders.
