Participation of Kentucky Woodland Owners in the Woody Biomass Market

Non-Technical Summary

Concerns about anthropogenic climate change, energy independence and rural development are driving policies toward expanding the use of woody biomass as a source or renewable energy. Since most forestland in Kentucky is privately owned the participation of woodland owners in supplying biomass is critical for the development of a biomass industry in the state.

Through utilizing a combination of economic analysis, focus groups studies and conjoint analysis surveys this project will provide crucial information concerning the willingness of woodland owners to participate in a biomass market and how this willingness is influenced by policies and incentives aimed at promoting the environmental sustainability and economic viability of the industry. It is anticipated that this information will be useful in designing effective policies and incentive programs to promote a sustainable woody biomass production in Kentucky.

2011 Project Description

The economic analysis of the potential impact of woody bioenergy production on NIPF (Non-Industrial Private Forest) landowners in Kentucky has been completed. In addition, all focus groups have been completed - three representing landowners, three representing loggers in Kentucky and one representing policy experts in Kentucky. Preliminary work on the survey portion of the project has begun.

2011 Impact

Results from the economic analysis and focus groups are being analyzed and will be disseminated through publications within a year.
