Evaluation of Soybean Varieties for Use in Kentucky

T.W. Pfeiffer, E.L. Lacefield
Department of Plant and Soil Sciences

Non-Technical Summary

Soybean, along with corn and wheat, is one of three major grain crops produced in Kentucky. In the past ten years Kentucky soybean producers achieved record yields six times: 1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2006. One principal reason for this continuing yield increase is the continual increase in soybean varieties' genetic potential. An important step in the development of a profitable soybean production system is the selection of a variety that has the potential for maximizing yield in the producer's environment. As the number of varieties available to Kentucky farmers increases, the producer needs unbiased information comparing the yield potential of these varieties at multiple locations in Kentucky. Annual replicated small plot tests will compare soybean variety yields at five Kentucky locations. The data will be published in an annual performance test report by the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station.

2011 Project Description

This project provides Kentucky soybean producers with performance information concerning soybean varieties being sold for production in KY. Soybean variety performance tests with 235 entries from 30 contributing organizations were conducted in McLean County, Caldwell county, Warren County, Fayette County, and Calloway County. Yield, agronomic and seed quality data were collected, analyzed and published.

Dissemination: Information is disseminated through the print publication listed below and through various web sites associated with the College of Agriculture, University of Kentucky. Information is also disseminated by extension specialists at several regional early-bird production meetings held during December in west Kentucky.

2011 Impact

These actions allow for appropriate variety adoption decisions by Kentucky soybean producers, thus improving soybean productivity and profitability.
