Complementary Approaches to Developing Scab Resistant Wheat Varieties

Non-Technical Summary

Fusarium head blight is a serious disease of wheat in Kentucky. Our crop is at risk due to the cropping system and rotation we follow. Consequences include reduced yield, test weight and grain quality as well as reduced food safety through toxin accumulation. All of these factors lead to reduced dollars to farmers and to the entire wheat industry. The best approach to solving this problem is through breeding integrated with management tools such as fungicides. The impact of this work is on the order of multi-million dollar savings in a year with moderate disease pressure in Kentucky.

May 17 field day Princeton KY discussed ScabSmart approaches to scab control

Meetings:

Dec 4-6 2011 National FHB Forum, St. Louis: organized and hosted this meeting of > 200 participants who presented talks and posters on scab control.

January 11 Wheat science meeting in Hopkinsville - discussed scab management with growers.

March 8, 2011 Wooster Ohio met with other states in coordinated scab breeding project to discuss joint research plans

2011 Impact

All of the meetings referred to above led to a change in knowledge of scab breeding and management on the part of stakeholders and meeting participants. The field day may have led to a change in action on the part of growers who adjusted their scab management strategy based on the knowledge they gained.
