Grain crop production is inhibited by weeds. Weeds that inhibit grazing reduce forage quality and animal gains. This project examines the impact of weeds and tillage on crop production. This project examines methods to manage weeds that inhibit animal grazing.
2011 Project Description
Grain crops: Research focus was on Palmer amaranth and tall waterhemp, weeds resistant to glyphosate and other herbicides in Kentucky soybeans in far western Kentucky. On farm research sites in two counties demonstrated that these weeds could be controlled. Stakeholder tours of the plots were well received. A Master of Science student conducted the research for his thesis research.
Beef pastures: Tall ironweed was the target weed for research since it continues to be a major weed problem. Multiple research sites across Kentucky were chosen for this research. Commonly used herbicides were evaluated for injury to five tall fescues.
2011 Impact
Grain crops: Palmer amaranth and tall waterhemp are now found in thirty Kentucky counties and efforts to describe the negative impact of these weeds on soybean yield was well received by growers and the soybean commodity groups.
