Insulin Resistance in the Horse: Induction, Duration and Effects on the Estrous Cycle of the Mare

Non-Technical Summary

Insulin resistance predisposes horses to develop laminitis. The goal is to test two models to determine whether induction of insulin resistance is transient or persists for at least one week in duration. The effects of inducing insulin resistance on the estrous cycle of the mare will be determined. The final aim will determine DHEA concentrations in blood samples collected from young versus aged animals and obese versus non-obese animals. In both aged and obese animals DHEA concentrations are anticipated to be greater than their counterparts.
