Biotechnology
Ag Biotechnologyis the application of many scientific disciplines to the study of living organisms and the use of this information for commercial/practical applications.
Biotechnology involves genetic engineering, antibody and vaccine production, fermentation technology, plant regeneration from single cells, and many more emerging scientific techniques.

The challenges of biotech-nology are to expand its usefulness by identifying and cloning new genes and traits, developing new diagnostic tests and vaccines, and continuing to use these tools to better understand the plants, animals, and microbes that make up our world.

Scientists have a new set of tools through biotechnology:

  • Plant, animal, and human disease diagnosis relies heavily on biotechnology for answers to age-old questions.
  • Recombinant DNA technology (genetic engineering) provides enormous potential for detecting, modifying, or adding genes into organisms. We are no longer limited to the gene pool within a species.
  • Fermentation biotechnology has led to the production of new livestock food additives, vitamins, and growth hormones, all in a fraction of the time it once took entire research teams to accomplish similar tasks.

Ag BiotechnologyYour College Courses
The individualized program in biotechnology was created with you in mind. You and your advisor will work together to design a course of study that includes a core curriculum of lecture and laboratory courses. In these classes you will have ample opportunity to meet and get to know fellow students. In addition, you and you advisor will select courses unique to your interests and career orientation.

Sure I met other students in the Ag Biotechnology Club. But more importantly I met upperclass students— they helped me tremendously, as mentors and guides.
—Allison Thompson

The Program
You will have time in your first and second years to interact with faculty, visit their laboratories, and obtain first-hand information to help you in career decisions. We are here to help you receive the best education and to assist you in defining your career and professional goals.

Ag BiotechnologyOur biotechnology program will provide you with the practical experiences employers seek. Because our program requires you to complete an independent research project or summer internship at a cooperating biotechnology company, you gain the confidence and technical skills many jobs require. This provides you with exposure to research environments in both an academic setting and in industry.

Special Opportunities

  • Summer internships, employment, short courses, and tours are all possibilities with biotechnology firms in the Bluegrass area, including Alltech Biotechnology Center, Equine BioDiagnostics, Inc., GenApps, Martek, and Neogen.
  • The Biotechnology Club— a student organization that helps biotech students get to know each other and exchange ideas with faculty and industrial scientists in the field.

Ag BiotechnologyCareers

When you graduate with a biotechnology degree you will have the knowledge and skills to enter directly into a technical or research position. This includes laboratory positions at universities, or with private industry, or with the government. You will also be well prepared to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees in the life sciences (genetics, biochemistry, physiology), professional degrees (medicine, pharmacy, veterinary science), or advanced degrees in such areas as agricultural law or agricultural business.

Biotechnology graduates are very successful in today’s competitive job market. The number of biotechnology companies is increasing, while the number of well-trained professionals is limited.

Our program will give you the training and knowledge you need to stay at the forefront of this exciting and challenging field.

The College of Agriculture is an equal opportunity organization.

Agricultural Biotechnology offers an exceptional opportunity in a wide range of scientific areas. The faculty helped me with internships, job opportunities, professional advice, and personal advice; even as a professional, after graduate school, I still turn to them – the faculty make the College of Agriculture special.

—Warren Pinkston
Alltech Biotechnology

As a high school student I was nervous about attending a big university like UK. Well, I worried for nothing. The College of Agriculture is small and personal, so I’m getting a great education in a place that’s friendly and helpful.

—Holly Kennedy

As a UK biotech student you will be involved in cutting-edge research as part of your degree.
