Plant and Soil Science

Horticulture, Plant and Soil Sciences touches your life every day. The Horticulture, Plant and Soil Sciences profession is concerned with plants used for food, fiber, forage, oil, recreation, landscaping, enhancement of the human environment, conservation of our soil and water resources, and all related services.

Graduates with a B.S. degree in Horticulture, Plant and Soil Sciences are needed in production, management, distribution, sales, consulting, research, education, recreation, and public service.
If you’re interested in understanding how plants grow, if you enjoy the basic sciences and using advanced computer technology, if you’d like to work outdoors or own a farm or business, if you want to educate others or have the opportunity for international travel, then consider a major in Horticulture, Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Kentucky.

The Program
Our graduates function effectively as professionals because they have the technical and scientific skills – as well as the communication, computational, leadership, and interpersonal capabilities – necessary for success.

You may select one of seven Areas of Emphasis in the Horticulture, Plant and Soil Science program.

Areas of Emphasis

Plant and Soil Science Crops and Livestock – emphasizes the intersections between the crop and livestock industries. Graduates find their niche in agricultural extension or livestock and crop consulting, farm management, and production agriculture, or agricultural supply business.
Plant and Soil Science Crops and Soils – emphasizes the interactions between plants and soils. Graduates are employed in positions in crop consulting, a wide range of agribusinesses, and crop farm management.
Plant and Soil Science Horticultural Enterprise Management – emphasizes horticultural production and business skills. Careers include managing nurseries, greenhouses or fruit/vegetable enterprises; installing and maintaining ornamental plants; and managing botanical gardens.
Plant and Soil Science Horticultural Science – emphasizes horticulture and the basic sciences. Careers include research positions with universities, botanical gardens, the USDA, industry, and state and federal regulatory services. Graduates are well prepared to pursue advanced degrees.
Plant and Soil Science Plant Pest Management – emphasizes the science and technology of integrated pest management through a combination of entomology, plant pathology, and weed management. Graduates work in research and management positions in agribusiness and public agencies.
Plant and Soil Science Soil and Water Environmental Science – emphasizes the basic sciences and concentrates on soil and water interaction. Graduates are prepared for careers with such federal and state agencies as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Natural Resource Conservation Service, or the Kentucky Division of Water.
Plant and Soil Science Turfgrass Science – emphasizes the science and business aspects of intensively managed grass plantings. Graduates are employed in golf course management, the commercial lawn care industry, and the management of turf fields for other sports.

Plant and Soil ScienceYour Professors
The University of Kentucky is a large teaching/research/service university. Here you will have the opportunity to interact with faculty and staff who are experts in their fields. Your professors are developing the latest technology or knowledge, or using the latest technologies to seek solutions to applied problems and research questions. They also conduct statewide educational programs which communicate the latest technology to professionals in the plant and soil industries and to consumers.

At the University of Kentucky you will also have the opportunity to become involved in national and regional activities of professional associations. Your faculty advisor will provide personalized academic and career advising, and guide you through every stage of your college career. Only at a land-grant university like the University of Kentucky is it possible to obtain this high quality education in Horticulture, Plant and Soil Sciences.

Special Opportunities

An important part of your college education and experience occurs outside the classroom. Clubs, internships, and other work experiences enhance your education.

Plant and Soil ScienceInternships – As an intern you develop professional skills, acquire knowledge, develop self confidence and leadership skills, and make personal contacts. Many corporations and institutions have formal internship programs.

Clubs – Here’s your chance to become acquainted with other students and faculty in an informal atmosphere. Life-long friendships develop through club activities.

Agronomy Club – provides opportunities to foster professional growth and build student friendships. The club sponsors a soils judging team, and travels regularly to other university campuses.

Horticulture Club – students participate each year in intercollegiate contests. The club raises funds for educational trips to study horticultural enterprises in Europe, different regions of the U.S., Canada, and New Zealand.

Student Chapter, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America – students meet and network with fellow turf majors, both from UK and other universities; meet industry professionals; participate in field trips; and attend the GCSAA annual meetings.

Research Experience – Many opportunities exist to gain valuable research experience. Students learn to operate sophisticated laboratory instruments or perform cultural techniques for field or greenhouse production.

Scholarships – Many local and national scholarships are available for our students.

Employment – Students are routinely employed during the school year and the summer by faculty members in the College of Agriculture.

 Facilities

Instructors use computer presentation technology, videos, slides, and other visuals to improve the learning experience. Internet access is available in each classroom. Computer laboratories for instruction and student assignments are equipped with the latest software applications.

The 100-acre University of Kentucky Lexington-Fayette County Arboretum is an outstanding teaching facility for plant identification classes. Extensive plantings include ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers, grasses, vegetables, and fruits.
Modern, well-equipped farms, greenhouses, and laboratories provide opportunities for practical experiences and for demonstrating cultural and management techniques and use of sophisticated equipment.

After wandering around in several majors, I found my home in horticulture. Walking into classes each semester and recognizing friendly faces makes the learning experience that much more enjoyable! And the College of Agriculture faculty and staff are the most friendly, helpful, and welcoming people in the university.
